“One Building Inspection Process – Permit Conditions
Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Affidavits”
Due to a recent law enacted by the State of California, the contractor performing work related to a system may simply request a final inspection when the work is complete. The one-inspection process is substantially different from the traditional ways inspections were conducted in the past and limit the “pre-inspection/rough inspection criterion.” However, Building and Safety staff has embraced a new “single inspection process” and contractors are encouraged to review the detailed program. The single inspection process can only be successful if all parties understand the procedure - If in doubt – please call Building and Safety and ask questions. Building and Safety also wants to make sure homeowners of the property understand this process, and any given time, should the homeowner or the contractor desire to have in-process or rough inspections, the Building and Safety Division will be more than accommodating in these regards at no additional cost. Again, please keep in mind, the law is very specific, only one inspection is required.
State law also mandates that when any improvement to a residential structure requires a building permit, then the installation of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are required. In order to help facilitate the one-inspection process, many times the “homeowner is not present during the inspection” therefore, the Building and Safety Division will accept a Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Affidavit. However, at any time during the process should the homeowner or contractor request the building inspector enter the home to observe these components, that inspection will be accommodated.
