Since incorporation in 1991, the citizens of the City of Calabasas have been very proactive and environmentally conscious. In support of these community environmental goals, via City Council and the Environmental Commission and their direction to the Community Development Department, we initiate and monitor programs that are innovative and reasonable. One of these many leading efforts was initiated in the year 2008, when in collaboration with the California Building Standards Commission; Calabasas was the first City in the State to adopt the “Green Building Code,” and the first City in the Nation to have a “Codified” Green Building Code.
The term “Green building” is referring to “sustainability” and a process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout the lifetime of a building, which includes: the design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. These stages require close cooperation of the design team, architects, engineers, the client, and the Building and Safety team at all stages of the project. The Green Building practice shifts goals and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.
The Building and Safety Division strives for excellence in regards to customer service for the administration of permit issuance and inspection approvals. The Division does not distinguish one type of green measure or program to be of more importance than another; if the project is a Solar Energy based permit, we are committed to providing the same level of excellent customer service provided to all other Building and Safety permit applicants.
