CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT
To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past. You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library, where you can access the website, as well.
"THAR SHE BLOWS!" This is an old whaling term used by hunters when the mammal was spotted, but did you know that a whale was found in Calabasas 43 years ago? Many local residents don't realize that the land forming the Santa Monica Mountains - including Calabasas - was once at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. In 1981, whale bones were found during an excavation where Parkway Calabasas meets the Ventura Freeway. The bones were estimated to be 3-10 million years old and from a mammal that was 40-60 feet long. And that's no fish story!
Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please visit the Library's History page or contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

BOOK REVIEW: COLD CREMATORIUM: REPORTING FROM THE LAND OF AUSCHWITZ BY JÓZSEF DEBRECZENI
There are numerous books that have been published about the experiences of Holocaust survivors, among which the best known are “Night” by Elie Wiesel, “Man's Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl, and “Maus” by Art Spiegelman. Originally published in Yugoslavia in 1950, but suppressed for decades due to Cold War politics, Cold Crematorium: Reporting from the Land of Auschwitz by József Debreczeni has now been published in English and is a worthy addition to the canon. Debreczeni was a Hungarian journalist who was interred in various camps orbiting Auschwitz in the latter years of WW II. The reader acquires interesting revelation about life in these camps, such as the fact that the Nazis used a divide-and-conquer strategy to pit their Jewish prisoners against each other by structuring hierarchies of power among them. This is a sobering yet still inspiring account of perseverance against terrible odds. The Library has this title available in Print.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
It was a long, hot summer but we had lots of cool programs at the Library. During our Summer Reading Program, which was held from July 5 through August 4, 306 patrons signed up for BookPoints, 218 bags were given out to children, we had 19 events attended by over 500 patrons. The 32 teen volunteers helped people sign up and gave out weekly incentives and books. Adult patrons received reusable bags for signing up and many of our patrons received gift cards for participating in the program. Thank you to sponsors, Mendocino Farms, Rosti, Pedalers Fork and the Friends of the Calabasas Library.
Our Library also participated in the One Book, One County Library program. Both book clubs read and discussed L.A. Weather by María Amparo Escandón. A live event was held in downtown LA with a musical performance from Banda Las Angelinas and a conversation with the author. If you missed this event, you can view it on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpyeaTvjqpI.
As fall starts, so does most of our normal programming. These programs include story times and Writers’ Club for children, book clubs and Online Film Fanatics for adults. Check our website or visit us at the Library for more information.
That’s all for this month.
