CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT
To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past. You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library, where you can access the website, as well.
Long before Calabasas High School opened, student education was happening on the same site. In the 1950s, the students were “equestrian campers’ at the Glory Ranch where they learned the art of horsemanship and were taught to care for, ride and show horses all summer long. The Glory Ranch provided housing for up to 18 kids at a time – ages 10-16. Rosemary Gebert also raised, trained and showed palomino horses nationally, sired by her famous "Top Hat," palomino stallion and rode her horses in the Pasadena Festival of Roses Parade for 16 years.
Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

BOOK REVIEW - FINDING MARGARET FULLER BY ALLISON PATAKI
This is an amazing story of a brilliant woman, Margaret Fuller who was invited into the lives of the Transcendentalists. She became friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau and Louisa May Alcott. She was the first editor of The Dial, the Transcendentalist publication. This book tells us how she became a journalist, teacher, translator and author of the first major feminist work in the United States. Horace Greeley appointed her as literary critic and first female foreign news correspondent. She was an advocate of women’s rights and particularly women's education. Yes, she was a remarkable woman and the interweaving of the other Transcendentalists makes for an even more intriguing story. The library has this title in book format.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
September was a busy month at the Library as school started and Library programs began again after a short hiatus. September was Library Card sign up month. If you already have a library card, bring in a friend or colleague to get one. As a reminder for students, we have several research online resources available for free with a library card through the Library website. Online Study Buddies will start on October 8 and students can sign up for personal homework help.
If you’re a small business owner or part of the Chamber of Commerce or a business organization, let your fellow members know that with a library card, they have full access to Data Axle Reference Solutions free of charge! This is a service where patrons can create marketing plans, conduct competitive analysis, locate people, and search for jobs. Accurate company and residential data for the U.S is available as well as business listings, residential listings, job and internship searches, historical business information, and new movers/homeowners list.
In September, we also recognized Banned Book Week. Banned Books Week (September 22 – 28, 2024) celebrates the freedom to read, which spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. In addition, October 19 is Freedom to Read Day. Reading is more than an activity. It’s a gateway to exploring different life experiences, diverse cultures, and the vast expanse of our world. It enriches minds and broadens perspectives, making it essential for personal growth and societal advancement.
Libraries are at the heart of this freedom. We are committed to providing access to a wide range of books, materials, research databases, and digital tools that support your right to read and learn. By offering these resources, we help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to explore new ideas and information.
And to those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Happy New Year and Shanah Tovah!
That’s all for this month.
