Jules (2023)
PG-13 and 87 minutes
Jules follows Milton who loves a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town, but finds his day upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the extra-terrestrial he calls "Jules." Things become complicated when two neighbors discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT
To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past. You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library, where you can access the website, as well.
Nearly forgotten today is that in 1973 a group of influential city and county boosters put forth a proposal to make a significant portion of unincorporated land in the western spur of Los Angeles County into a single large city that would encompass today’s Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Calabasas. In 1981, Westlake Village became its own city followed by Agoura Hills a year later. Calabasas was the last to incorporate in 1991.
Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

BOOK REVIEW - OUR SUBWAY BABY: THE TRUE STORY OF HOW ONE BABY FOUND HIS HOME BY PETER MERCURIO
November is Adoption Awareness Month! Which makes it a great time to read a book with your children about adoption and how different families are built. Our Subway Baby: The true story of how one baby found his home, written by Peter Mercurio and illustrated by Leo Espinosa, recounts the true story of how baby Kevin was found in a New York City subway station by an unsuspecting subway commuter named Danny. Thus begins the story of how the author of the book - Peter - and his partner Danny, go from being a couple to being Papa Pete and Daddy Danny. Written as a story being told directly to Kevin, the book teaches us that life can change in ways we are unprepared for, but that. "Where there is love, anything is possible." This title is available in print in the picture book section of the library under PIC MER.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
Last month I had the opportunity to visit the Calabasas Community Center where 60 volunteers from the Caring Calabasas Club, the Braille Institute, and the Caruso organization were working on a project to prepare Braille books for children. The volunteers pasted clear tape with Braille lettering over the words so that caregivers would be able to read to children as the children followed along with Braille. Several of the books have been donated to the Library and we will be setting up a special shelf to display them. Thanks so much to Carol Davis and all the volunteers for their work and for thinking of the Library for this amazing project.

In other news, since the termination last year of the MOU with Hidden Hills for the use of their Library Funds to purchase digital media and subscription services for the School District, LVUSD students and staff may notice some changes in their ability to access many of these services. Since we needed to reduce our budget, we had to eliminate many of the online resources and decrease e-book purchases. At the same time, the California State Library discontinued many of the free e-resources that were provided during COVID. The end of the MOU also affected the upload of the digital card database.
The good news is that we still have the essential online resources that we had before the MOU and we will continue to purchase bestsellers and critically acclaimed books. LVUSD staff and students can use the regular library card number to access the resources. For information on obtaining a library card, visit our website at https://www.cityofcalabasas.com/government/library/library-card-application or call the circulation desk.
As the holidays approach, we want to thank all veterans for their service and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!
That’s all for this month.
