BOOK REVIEW - WOMAN, CAPTAIN, REBEL: THE EXTRAORDINARY TRUE STORY OFA DARING ICELANDIC SEA CAPTAIN BY MARGARET WILLSON
Captain Thurídur was born in Iceland in 1777 and grew up fishing with her brother, taking over the family business. It was hard work and her family was poor, never being able to own much land. Her fascinating yet tragic life to become an acclaimed fishing captain is told with adventure and compassion. She solved a notorious crime, used the courts to fight for justice, even while being ridiculed for her audacity for being a woman and outperforming her male counterparts. This book is brilliantly researched and makes the reader or listener want to find out more about this incredible woman who had extraordinary courage and a work ethic that was unmatched. Captain Thurídur is a hero to this day for her modern ways of thinking and fighting for her rights. The Library has this title in e-book and e-audiobook.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone has a chance to spend time with family and friends. If you are traveling, check out a digital book to save space in your luggage.
We are cancelling the Tuesday evening book club this month, as it is so close to Thanksgiving. We will have a holiday potluck for the December 19 book club. It gives everyone two months to read The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah.
We had our 25th anniversary celebration on October 8. There was a great turnout with City Council, Library Commission and Friends of the Library members attending. It was wonderful to see many of our former city leaders and, of course, our patrons.
This month, on November 8 we will have a ceremony to recognize Ellen Pangarliotas. Ellen was one of the leaders who spearheaded the creation of the City of Calabasas Library. She was an original Friend of the Library member and the longest acting Library Commissioner. She passed away last year and we certainly miss her. We hope everyone will join us in the Library from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. as we unveil a picture of Ellen for permanent display.
That’s all for this month.
