ONLINE FILM FANATICS

whilewewatchedOn Wednesday, May 15th at 6:00 p.m. we’ll be discussing two great films!

While We Watched (2022)
Not rated and 90 minutes

A film by Vinay Shukla, Khushboo Ranka and Luke W. Moody

This event is a collaboration with POV, PBS’ award-winning nonfiction film series.

POV

A timely depiction of a newsroom in crisis, While We Watched follows Ravish Kumar for two years as he battles a barrage of fake news, falling ratings and the resulting cutbacks while struggling to maintain fact-based analyses. Will his show survive or become a swan song of reason - drowning out in sensationalism, misinformation, and ratings-driven editorial decisions?

This film will be available by a Dropbox link two weeks before our May 15th discussion.  To receive the link, you must email Karilyn Steward at ksteward@calabasaslibrary.org

sweetsmellofsuccess
Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Not rated and 96 minutes

A powerful film about a ruthless journalist and an unscrupulous press agent who'll do anything to achieve success.  It's late at night in Times Square, and everything's buzzing with nervous energy. But press agent Sidney Falco is oblivious to it all as he nervously waits for the early edition of The Globe. Whose career did gossip columnist J. J. Hunsecker launch today... and whose did he destroy?

This movie is available on hoopla and other streaming services.

Calabasas Road c. 1950 Scandia Craftsman store LR

Would you believe? The plain looking retail storefronts on Calabasas Road in the 1950s were transformed in the popular Sagebrush Cantina starting in 1974?  It’s true!  The Scandia Crafts business sign carries the 23527 street address of the Sagebrush today. Next door to Scandia is the original administrative office for Hidden Hills – both from a time when the Calabasas area was a little less polished.

Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

BOOK REVIEW: THE FIRST LADIES BY MARIE BENEDICT AND VICTORIA CHRISTOPHER MURRAY

the first ladies

From the authors of The Personal Librarian comes this well-researched book of two extraordinary women, Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the President of the United States and Mary McLeod Bethune, African-American activist and educator who came together through shared beliefs in women’s rights and education. They created a personal friendship that inspired them to work toward an anti-lynching policy and fight together for justice for all people. The library has this title in book format.

MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD

LibraryParksPass_FB_HorizontalPost_1200x630It’s finally spring! Maybe. After a cold, wet winter it appears to be warming up.  It’s time to get out and experience nature in our beautiful California State Parks. In conjunction with the First Partner’s Office and the California State Library, State Parks is providing free vehicle day-use entry to over 200 participating state parks for check out to library card holders. The Library has 12 park passes. You can keep them for two weeks and there is usually no waiting to get one.

But you better hurry.  Due to impending cuts in the state budget, we have been notified that this program may be ending. The State Parks Program was not included in the governor’s January Budget. Efforts are being made to include at least some funding for it in the final budget signed by the governor in June. We’ll know more then. The passes will still be accepted by State Parks through December 31, 2024.

So for now, you can park and take a stroll around the Malibu Lagoon, visit the Rock Pool at Malibu Creek State Park or take your dog for a walk on Leo Carrillo Beach. Go farther afield to northern California or the desert. A list of participating parks is online or ask one of our reference librarians.

Happy trails to you!

 That’s all for this month.
