CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT
To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past. You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library, where you can access the website, as well.
Still looking brand new, this approximately 40-year-old sign at the corner of Parkway Calabasas and Ventura Blvd. pointed the way to the Calabasas Municipal Court that operated from 1975 to 2000. This sign was still standing in 2024 - long after the court closed – as no one had removed the sign. Earlier this year, the Calabasas Library Special Collections department contacted LA County Public Works and requested the sign for its historical collection. The County kindly obliged and it is now in the city’s historical collection.
Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.
BOOK REVIEW: THREE MAGICAL MILES: L.A.'S AMAZING HISTORICAL NEIGHBORHOOD BY BRIAN ROONEY
Did you know that hundreds of classic Hollywood films and television shows were filmed locally in what is now one of California's many State Parks? Currently in its third edition, "Three Magical Miles: L.A.'s Amazing Historical Neighborhood" by the Calabasas Library's own archivist Brian Rooney provides a comprehensive guide to locales just a few miles away where stars like Cary Grant, John Wayne, Katherine Hepburn, Maureen O'Hara and Elvis Presley plied their trade.
Countless productions from "Gone With The Wind", "How Green Was My Valley" and the "Planet of the Apes" films to TV hits like "M*A*S*H" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" were filmed within a three-mile radius that included Malibou Lake and the (former) 20th Century Fox and Paramount Ranches. Rooney also provides the history behind beloved area establishments like The Old Place and the Rock Store in this fascinating and lavishly illustrated tome. The Library has this title available in book form.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
The Summer Reading Program stands as a cornerstone of our library's community engagement efforts, fostering a love for reading and learning among patrons of all ages. The program promotes literacy, expands knowledge, provides access to diverse reading materials and combats summer learning loss. The events are both fun and informational with the intent of bringing more people into the Library.
The programs are geared to patrons from preschool to adult. You can check out all the events listed in this newsletter and on our website calendar. We also have an online program called BookPoints and you can sign up for it on our website. You keep track of the books you’ve read and earn points for reading and activities, earn special achievement badges, and online tickets. Winners of the drawings can get gift cards from local eateries and stores. The gift cards are provided by The Friends of the Calabasas Library.
So come in or look online to register for events or for BookPoints. There are no tests or extra requirements. It’s summer. Relax and have some fun.
That’s all for this month.
