BOOK REVIEW - NO JOB FOR A MAN BY JOHN ROSS BOWIE
No Job for a Man is a witty and thought provoking memoir by the Big Bang Theory and Speechless star and comedian, John Ross Bowie. He knew that he wanted to be an actor at a very young age. Watching television, he saw a world not like his own and it all seemed unattainable. John had little support from his family, especially his father, who made it clear that acting was “no job for a man.” He tried many professions and even a punk band, floundering again and again, until he discovered improv and began working on himself personally. He met his future wife and decided to take the plunge in a healthy relationship and his dream of acting. There are failures and losses, but hope and success along the way. John learns what being a man really means and how life is worthwhile, even with ups and downs. The Library has this title in e-book and e-audiobook.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
After all the holiday celebrations are over, January is the perfect time to catch up on your reading. Everyone seems to bring back their books at the holiday time so there are plenty of selections on the shelves.
I was lucky enough to get a prepublication copy of Lee Goldberg’s forthcoming book, Dream Town. It’s another book in the Eve Ronin series that is set in Calabasas and the surrounding areas. It is a true page-turner. If you haven’t read his work before we have all of the Eve Ronin books at the Library. It’s fun to read about our city and know all the landmarks. Lee also wrote the Monk series and some standalone titles. One of my favorite books is Malibu Burning. It was published this fall. It is fast paced and surprising.
I can’t wait to hear him talk about the book at our author event on Tuesday, January 16th at 6:00 p.m. He will be in the Founders Hall at the Library in conversation with Gregg Hurwitz. Like Lee, Gregg is also a bestselling author. He appeared at an author event at the Library before, and is an interesting speaker and an interesting person. The Library has more than 20 titles of his work in all formats.
Dream Town is not on-sale until January 16 but will be available for purchase and signing that night. Gregg will also have copies of his books for purchase and signing.
Lee had a real life encounter with some bad guys a few months ago. Maybe he will talk about it. If not, you can ask him. See you all there!
That’s all for this month.
