BOOK REVIEW - THE BOYS IN THE BOAT BY DANIEL JAMES BROWN
This informative and inspiring book tells the story of the University of Washington’s 1936 eight-man’s rowing team. These unlikely heroes were from families of loggers, farmers, and shipyard workers who competed against the elite schools and won. The narrative was drawn from their diaries and journals and it was so personal, I felt like I was there. The emotionally, intensive story was set in the 1930’s amid world events that were leading up to World War II. The exciting conclusion was the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin where before Adolf Hitler, the boys defeated the top rowers in the world and took home gold medals. Now it’s a major motion picture directed by George Clooney. The library has the title in book, e-book, book on CD and e-audiobook. The library also has young reader versions.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
As all the various news outlets have reminded us, this January was the 30th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake. I remember it well since I lived in Woodland Hills at the time. Fortunately, no one in our family was hurt and we had no structural damage to our house. However, we had no power or water for more than a week. We were unbelievably lucky in that our neighbor was the manager of a Ralph’s grocery store in the valley and was able to get us bottled water and diapers for the baby.
That was definitely an anomaly. I hate to say it but I’m not sure I’m that much more prepared at home now. How about you? To that end, we have many books in the Library about disaster preparedness and emergency response. Come check them out (and I will too!)
On a happier note, this month we celebrate Valentine’s Day or Galantine’s Day as the case may be. If you’re looking for inspiration for that love note, we have many books of love poems in the Library’s collection. They will be on display.
February is also Black History month. The theme for 2024 is African Americans and the Arts. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression the African-American influence has been paramount. The Library has some beautiful books on African-American art and biographies of performers, writers, and other prominent artists.
In addition to books, the Library continues to offer programming for all ages. We have added some new and interesting programming this month. Please check our calendar for all events.
That’s all for this month.
