BOOK REVIEW - BUT HAVE YOU READ THE BOOK?: 52 LITERARY GEMS THAT INSPIRED OUR FAVORITE FILMS BY KRISTEN LOPEZ
A great many people have seen movie adaptations of famous (and not-so-famous) novels, without having read the original source material. Have you ever watched a movie and wondered how much was changed from the page to the screen? If so, then this is the book for you. But Have You Read the Book?: 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films (published under the beloved Turner Classic Movies© brand name) examines a collection of well-known films that were based on published novels. Many popular titles, from the 1931 version of Frankenstein to the 2021 version of Frank Herbert's Dune are scrutinized and compared with the original books, and in these succinct essays it is fun to learn about the similarities and differences in the literary and celluloid versions. As author Kristen Lopez writes in her forward: "In selecting the books for this compendium, I wanted a broad cross-section, not just of genres and authors, but translations that are either literal or completely different." The Library has this title available in Print.
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
This is the final month of an incredibly busy year. At the beginning of 2023, we were still experiencing the lingering effects of Covid. However, as the year wore on, the library began to see an increase in visits and a return to normalcy.
I just finished compiling FY 22-23 statistics for the California State Library annual report. The library has over 75,000 physical items but with the addition of Hoopla and Cloud Library for streaming video, e-books and e-audiobooks, there are 1,967,091 items available for checkout! Although we still have a few programs online, we are offering many in-person programs for all ages. In total, we presented 207 programs throughout the year.
Some of the highlights of the year included:
- A return to in-person Pumpkin Patch story time sessions; Over 500 participants attended the Library‘s Fall Session Pumpkin Patch Story Times alone.
- The Fun Fair with lots of games, a story walk, a visit from the National Park Service Outreach truck, performances by the Calabasas High School Jazz Combo II and the Tri-M from Agoura High School Music.
- Live Summer Reading Programs; The Alley Cats show was a huge success that attracted an audience of all ages. Other great shows included Bubblemania, Craig Newton’s music, Wonders of Wildlife and Wacky Wendee.
- Book clubs, film discussions, digital services classes and genealogy workshops for adults.
- Our 25th year as a city library with a big celebration in October.
- A ceremony to recognize Ellen Pangarliiotas, a long time Library Commissioner and city leader.
The Library will be closed for several days during the holidays. Starting on Tuesday, January 2nd, the Library will be open until 7pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please check the calendar for all our hours.
Have safe and happy holidays!
That’s all for this month.
