CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT

To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past.  You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library, where you can access the website, as well.

Calabasas Schoolhouse student body PS

The school days of early Calabasas is captured in this photo from our first schoolhouse built in 1890. While undated, this photo appears to be circa 1910 and is the entire student body of the school - grades 1-8 - with a weary looking teacher in the middle. This school was where Cadillac of Calabasas is today.

Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

BOOK REVIEW: WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS IN THE LIBRARY BY MICHIKO AOYAMA

Whatyouarelookinglibrary

This is a charming book set in Japan but the themes of connection, reading and finding a place for yourself are universal. In each of the five chapters, the people live in a community and in each story, the common thread is the librarian.  She not only provides recommendations but wisdom and somehow, exactly what they need. The Library has the title in book and e-book.

MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD

We’d like to welcome our newest hourly Librarian, Melissa Gwynne.  Melissa worked for years at the Burbank Public Library and has a wealth of experience.  She will be learning how to use our Integrated Library system and getting to know all our policies and procedures in the coming months. She replaced Marlene who left to retire.

You may have noticed that staff changes frequently.  While we have six full time staff, most of our people are hourly workers.  With the low joblessness rate, many leave to get full time jobs. We are in a constant mode of hiring and training. The Circulation Department is currently interviewing candidates for clerk positions since three staff members left this year.  Over the years we have trained many librarians right out of library school.  Many have gone on to prominent jobs; directors of Pomona Library and Camarillo Library and Assistant Director of Pasadena Library. Others are full time at Los Angeles Public Library or libraries across the country.

Several of our current long time librarians have retired from other systems and are not looking for full time work.  We very much appreciate them.  Our younger staff hold several part-time jobs and we appreciate them and their time management skills!

Despite the comings and goings of staff we try to make your library experience as seamless and customer friendly as possible. But, we appreciate your willingness to sometimes go with the flow as we bring new employees up to speed.

 That’s all for this month.
