Steve McAvoy, President Top Seed Tennis Academy, has been in the tennis business for over 30 years and is an award-winning top tennis coach and club manager in the United States. Between private lessons and Top Seed clinics Steve has curated an impressive resume of top junior, collegiate, and professional players including Gary Sacks – USC and ATP professional, Sam Querrey – top 30 ATP professional, Amanda Fink – USC and top 250 WTA player, and Katrina Scott – top world junior player and currently on the WTA tour.

Steve is one of the top coaches in the United States and was named the USPTA Top Tennis Manager in 2007. As President of Top Seed Tennis Academy Steve has managed the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center since 1994 and is one of the founders of The Paseo Club, Valencia. Steve’s management portfolio comprises of several clubs in Southern California including North Ranch Country Club, Sherwood Country Club, Cabrillo Racquet Club, and The Oaks of Calabasas. Steve and Top Seed are proud of the widespread operational success of involvement in tennis facilities across the southland, but the biggest accomplishment remains at Steve’s home club where he and Top Seed demonstrate year-over-year consistent improvement and growth of the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center.

Brady Hiete, Tennis Director, has been with Top Seed for 14 incredible years and is one of the most accomplished coaches in Southern California. Brady is an asset to the Top Seed team and his success is largely due to his ability to connect with adult and junior players. Brady is a master of the fundamentals and developmental expert who can identify areas of opportunity for all levels of players and his students experience weekly gameplay growth because of his technical expertise. Brady is not only an outstanding coach but takes pride in his role as a leader by ensuring the Top Seed tennis staff are kept up to date on the latest coaching techniques and are consistently improving their skill sets. Brady’s leadership contributes to the junior academy by ensuring Top Seed is on the forefront of innovative tennis instruction which benefits the players as well as parents who are impressed and excited with the consistent progress of their junior players. Regardless of level, Brady is available to advance your tennis skills or will find a well-suited Top Seed staff member to take your game to the next level.

Jason Gaona, Head Tennis Professional, has over 16 years with Top Seed and is one of several Top Seed staff members that grew up in the junior program at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center. Jason is a methodical and strong technical coach and wonderful adult group lesson instructor who has mastered the management of the adult tennis leagues. As the Adult League Director Jason manages the adult leagues at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center which are available for all levels of play from the 3.0 to the 4.5 player. Jason has a talent for matching doubles partners for those players who enjoy doubles tennis and are seeking someone with whom to compete. Jason’s strong coaching skills have positively influenced and enhanced match play of many top adult and junior players. Jason is also a well-respected Head Professional and significant contributor to many aspects of Top Seed junior and adult programs.

Jeff Richards, Tournament and Social Director, is a 30-year veteran of the tennis business and responsible for running some of the most elite tennis tournaments in Southern California. Jeff is a tremendous coach who naturally adapts to the needs of players and can impact gameplay regardless of level and age. Jeff is also the Tournament Director for the annual USTA Men’s Pro Championships of Calabasas, an active participant as a member of the Southern California USPTA and has previous experience as the Director of the San Fernando Valley division. The expertise in managing tournaments not only at the professional level but all levels from the lower level junior players to the advanced adult players. Jeff is so very committed on making everyone happy and Top Seed is extremely grateful for all of his hard work.

Terri Secondino Hamilton, Top Seed Director of Operations has been with Top Seed Tennis Academy for over 10 years and has risen from the front desk to managing the tennis office and working with the City of Calabasas on not only the tennis membership but the health membership as well. Terri is an exceptional communicator when dealing with the public, members, junior players, parents and the staff. She is involved not only in all aspects of the accounting for the club and Top Seed but also helps with the business to make it grow and prosper. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful employee here at the center and all of us at Top Seed lean on Terri for many duties.

Marvin Martinez, Maintenance Director for Top Seed Tennis Academy has worked with Top Seed for 9 years and oversees the entire maintenance staff and makes sure the center is always in great shape. He and his staff work extremely hard and not only clean the facility but also do many of the improvements such as painting, court repair, roof repair, pool improvements and many other projects. Marvin has put together a great staff that work all the time keeping out facility one of the best in Southern California.

The Top Seed After School Tennis Clinics have been home to some of the best players since 1994. Thousands of junior players participate, and the program produces a high percentage of Sectional and National Champions. The program is focused on “raising the level” of all players from the novice 5-year-old to the advanced 17-year-old nationally ranked competitor. Top Seed Coaches not only improve the player’s technical fundamentals, but also improve strategy as well as good sportsmanship and court etiquette. Clinic Levels:

Grand Prix – (Ages 5-7) For the younger tennis player getting started, Grand Prix is a 45-minute class that introduces and develops basic tennis skills and technique in a fun-filled and engaging environment. Grand Prix practice is held on our USTA approved 8 and under courts which are smaller in size allowing students to learn the rules on a court fundamentally appropriate for their age/skill. The tennis balls (orange dot) used for this level have a lower bounce and do not move as fast so they are easier to hit, allowing students time to get to the ball and promoting optimal swing patterns. 

Monday, Wednesday and Friday - 3:45-4:30pm, 4:30-5:15pm or 5:15-6:00pm

Challenger (Ages 8-13) For juniors who want to learn the basics of tennis in an engaging and fast-paced environment.
Monday, Tuesday & Thursday     4:30-6:00pm 

Tournament Training –  Students must be able to serve, rally, keep score, and play matches. Students are also encouraged to establish a UTR (Universal Tennis Rating). Brady Hiete or Jason Gaona must approve enrollment if the above requirements are in question.

Super Excellence –  For juniors with an appropriate UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) of 2.0 or higher. This is an intensive class designed for high level juniors looking to play competitive high school and potentially college tennis. Top Seed Tennis Academy is not just about junior players but also the adult tennis players. The adult tennis program at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center is a very active program designed for the active tennis enthusiast. The staff works with all levels from the 2.5 adult player to the 5.5 and above. The tennis staff works with women and men of all levels that really want to improve their tennis skills. Top Seed Academy offer tennis leagues, adult socials, adult drill classes, private lesson, tennis events and tournaments. The programs are designed for players at every level to becomes involved and play tennis at a higher level.

The adult drill classes are for groups of three or more players with a focus on movement, strategy and stroke development. The tennis staff work with players of all skill levels and know how to make each class exciting. Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center is a fantastic place for tennis leagues. The leagues managed by Jason Gaona and Top Seed Tennis Academy, are always sold out with nearly 200 players signed up every session, so early enrollment is encouraged. Leagues are quarterly, starting the third week of January, April, July and September.

The Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center hosts USTA Sanctioned Tournaments as well as Club Tournaments/Socials throughout the year. Our tournaments provide competitive play for juniors and adults and all of our tournaments are organized by the Top Seed Tennis Academy Staff.

Junior Tournaments 

Calabasas Level 6 (L6) Junior Novice Tournament

Held annually every Summer - A USTA sanctioned junior novice tournament. This tournament is typically for less experienced players. Juniors enter according to their age and gender, 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under, 16 & under, and 18 & under.  Each age group plays a one day round robin or elimination draw. 

Calabasas Level 5 (L5) Junior Open

Held annually in late Fall, (usually the weekend in November, around Veterans Day) - This USTA sanctioned junior tournament is the highest, most advance junior competition held at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center.  Nationally ranked juniors from all over Southern & Central California compete.  Boy’s & girl’s divisions with age groups from 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under, 16 & under, and 18 & under.

Adult Tournaments 

Calabasas Senior Championships

Held annually in early Spring, (usually the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March) - A USTA sanctioned age group tournament.  Starting from 30 years and over with separate divisions in 5-year increments, 30 and older, 35 and older, 40’s, 45’s, etc. all the way up to the 85’s!  Men’s & Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Level of play vary depending on age groups. 30’s to 45’s usually 5.0 – 4.0 NTRP levels.  50’s to 65’s usually 4.5 – 3.5 NTRP levels.  70’s to 85’s usually 4.0 – 3.0 NTRP levels.  This event typically has a number of top ranked Senior players in their age groups in Southern California. This is a USTA Level 5 Adult Senior event. 

Calabasas Fall Senior Classic

Held annually in early Fall, (usually the last weekend in September and the first weekend in October) - USTA sanctioned age group tournament.  Similar to the Calabasas Senior Championships except the levels of play are not as high.  This tournament is designed for the lower ranked, less experienced Senior players.  Men’s & Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  This is a Level 6 Adult Senior Open. 

Impact Team Tennis, formerly known as World Team Tennis

Held annually in the Spring or Summer - Although not a true Senior event, this team competition does offer Senior divisions (50+ & 60+).  Typically, there are not enough purely Senior teams in any given division to have a separate league.  The Staff will group our Senior teams in with 18 & over teams at the same level of play, 3.0’s, 3.5’s, 4.0’s and 4.5’s.  Calabasas always has several teams participate as Senior teams.

Pickleball Rules and Regulations

Effective February 2024

Court Reservations

1. Pickleball courts may only be reserved by Tennis members. Reservations are not taken without the names of all who will be playing.
   1. Non-Prime Time and Weekend Non-Prime Time members may only reserve pickleball courts during their designated membership hours.
2. Pickleball court reservations may be made no sooner than two days in advance by PHONE CALL ONLY beginning at 8:00am. In-person and handwritten reservations will not be accepted.
   1. One hour of court time is guaranteed for singles play and one and a half hours is guaranteed for doubles play. After that time, if you are not bumped, you may continue playing until you are bumped.
   2. Members may not reserve a specific court.
   3. If a member reserves a court, they may not reserve another court for an hour and a half after the first reservation ends even if they are playing with a different group of players.
   4. Players may not play back to back games even if they are playing with a different group of players. There must be an hour and a half in between game play for each participant.
   5. A member cannot reserve back to back games, whether singles or doubles.
   6. A member is limited to two reservations per day.
      1. If a pickleball court is open and a member has already played twice, they may use the court, however, are subject to being bumped if the court is needed.
   7. Members may only reserve courts for themselves. Courts cannot be reserved for others on the membership for an alternate time.
   8. Court reservations will be released after 15 minutes if members have not checked in to use the court.
   9. All non-members or members outside of their allotted membership hours playing on a reserved court must pay guest fee upon entrance.
3. Non-members cannot reserve a pickleball court. They must walk in and if a court is available, they must pay applicable fee to rent the court for one hour.

FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN MEMBERSHIP SUSPENSION, OR POSSIBLE TERMINATION.
