YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES

Question:  Can I request my child's team or coach?
Answer:  Only the Tiny Tot Division (ages 5 & 6) and WNBA (9U & 12U) allows requests regarding team choice or placement with specific friends and coaches.   Older divisions participate in an evaluation process and are selected by coaches in order to form teams with generally equal playing skills.

Question:  Do siblings get placed on the same team?  What if I prefer that they play on separate teams?
Answer:  Unless requested by the parents, siblings playing within the same division are automatically placed on the same team.

Question: If my child doesn't perform well at the evaluation, will he or she be eliminated from playing?
Answer: Absolutely not.  The Leagues is specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball and raise each player's skill level.

Question: What division should I register my child in if their birthday falls within the season?
Answer: You should place your child in the division that their age will be on December 1st for the Winter league and June 1st for the summer league. *Some exceptions can be made for extenuating circumstances, but they must be cleared with the league director. Players cannot play down in a younger age division.

Question: Why can't I choose my child's practice time?
Answer: Unfortunately, it is simply impossible to make a calendar work when factoring in the preferences of over 600 individual players.  Practice times are based on the limited hours in which gyms are available and whether those hours are appropriate for our young players on weeknights. Also, we rely on the kindness of community members to volunteer to coach and we allow them to select the best practice timeslot for their personal schedule.

Question: My child can't make the team's assigned practice time. What can I do? Can I get a refund?
Answer: Players are welcome to communicate directly with the coach to inquire about alternative practice hours, however, the coach has final say over the practice time. Participants are required to acknowledge the practice schedule policy while registering and therefore have agreed to the terms.  Refunds are not an option after the teams have been formed.

Question: Oh no!  When I went to register, it says that my child is on the waitlist. What happens now?
Answer: Once the City has reached the waitlist, spaces are only filled when another player drops out of the League. If someone drops before teams are formed by the coaches, a space will be offered in the order in which the players registered.  After teams have formed however, spaces are offered only when someone with a generally equal evaluation score drops out.   This policy is in place to help assure the teams remain generally equal.

Question: If my child is on the waitlist, do I have to pay the registration fees?
Answer:  There is no fee to be on the waitlist. Fees will be charged only if a space becomes available.

Question: I am on the waitlist - Does my child still need to attend the evaluations?
Answer:  Yes.  If a previously registered player drops out of the league, staff will search the waitlist for a comparable player with a similar evaluation score.

Question: Why does the League move to waitlists?  Why can't they add more teams or players so my child can play?
Answer: Staff have a desire to see every child play, however we are also dedicated to offering a high quality and fair program.  Here are a few of the questions we ask ourselves when deciding the quantity of teams and number of players on a team:
Is there adequate gym space for practices and games?
Is there a practice timeslot appropriate for your child to practice on a weeknight?
Do we have the necessary number of volunteers willing to coach?
Will every player meet their required play and rest requirements and will that change with more players on the team?

Question: Draft day has passed and I haven't heard from a coach regarding my child's team assignment. What do I do?
Answer: Coaches are instructed to contact their players within one week of the team draft. They are provided with their player's email address and phone number listed on the registration forms.  If your contact information has changed since registering or if you have not heard from your coach within a week's time, please contact the main office at 818-479-8180.

Question: Who do I talk to if I have a concern about my child's league experience?
Answer:  If at any time you have a concern regarding your child's basketball experience, we encourage you to reach out to your coach and work to resolve the matter. If your concerns are not met, then contact Lauren Katz at lkatz@cityofcalabasas.com or sportsleagues@cityofcalabasas.com or call 818-479-8180

Question: What happens during rain or inclement weather?
Answer: Games will be rescheduled if possible, however practice make ups are simply canceled.  Make up games will be moved to another day of the week.

ADULT BASKETBALL LEAGUES

Question:  What age do I have to be to play in the Adult League?
Answer: You must be age 16 or older during the session.  A parent or guardian signature is required on waiver if under age 18.

Question: Can I join the League as a single player?
Answer:  Currently, we offer a free agent night allowing teams to pick up a player or for free agents to form their own teams.

Question:  Why does my team have to pay a weekly game fee?  What does the $50 cover each week?
Answer: In an effort to minimize the upfront costs of team registrations, the League has chosen to spread the fees over the season.  The $50 covers the costs of officials, scorekeepers and other administrative expenses.

Question: Does Calabasas require a "forfeit" deposit at the time of registration like other leagues?
Answer: Calabasas does not charge an upfront forfeit deposit, but weekly game fees are due whether your team plays or not. If a team forfeits with less than 24 hours' notice they must pay both team officials fees.

Question: How late in the season can I add players or adjust my team's roster?
Answer: There is no timetable requirement for changing or adding players, except for playoff eligibility.  All players must appear in at least 3 league games to be eligible for post-season play.

Question: Does every team make the play-offs?
Answer: Depending on the size of the League (which fluctuates each session), teams are not guaranteed a post-season berth.  Staff does their best to accommodate all teams and will notify Captains prior to the final week of a session.

Question: What happens during rain or incelement weather?
Answer: Games will be rescheduled if possible.  Make up games will likely be moved to another day of the week.
