BAGS 4 BENCHES PLASTIC RECYCLING PROGRAM

The City of Calabasas Environmental Commission has partnered with various Calabasas High School students to participate in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge. The program aims to recycle 1,000 pounds of polyethylene film that would otherwise be sent to a landfill. The recycled materials are transformed into an eco-friendly Trex bench that will likely be placed in Calabasas High School!

The program includes the placement of centralized plastic collection boxes at City Hall, Las Virgenes Unified School District, Fazio Cleaners, and Calabasas High School AP Environmental Sciences Teacher Ms. Emily Sneed’s classroom.

GREEN STREET PROJECT UPDATE

The Las Virgenes Green Street project consisting of major shoulder and trail developments near north terminus of Las Virgenes Road is nearing completion. The general contractor has finished installation of the final asphalt overlay at the parking lot and will be finishing the remaining few items including striping and signage. The residents and visitors can begin using the parking lot immediately after the striping is completed.

This project is the first of its kind in City of Calabasas in terms of promoting the use of natural resources to filter surface runoffs as well as control dust and flood for the residents and hikers using the trail. Use of drought tolerant plants within the project not only promotes the aesthetic scenery of Southern California but also helps infiltration and treatment of storm water that would otherwise be transferred to the ocean untreated.
