ENGINEERING ASSISTANT
Part-Time, 20 hours per week (average)
$10.44-$13.07 per hour

Definition:

Under general supervision, participates in and oversees the performance of a variety of technical engineering support activities, including inspection services, traffic control review, traffic control design and review, transportation data collection, analysis, tabulation, and application of engineering data within specific work situations.

Essential Job Duties:

The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

  1. Creates engineering documents and plans utilizing AutoCAD software.

  2. Prepares a variety of routine and specialized reports as required.

  3. Performs mathematical calculations and statistical studies, and carries out related data analysis.

  4. Collects traffic data and prepares written reports and tables that illustrate the findings.

  5. Prepares quantity take-offs and cost data for capital improvement and municipal projects.

  6. Reviews traffic control plans for compliance.

  7. Conducts field surveys.

  8. Responds to inquiries and requests from the general public, business community and contractors regarding public works projects and programs, through friendly, professional customer service skills, ascertaining the needs of the customer and providing appropriate assistance and information, e.g., environmental, utilities, sewer, street, storm drainage.

  9. Carries out general office duties including filing, word processing, creating spreadsheets, producing PowerPoint presentations, answering phones, validating references and other related activities.

  10. Assists staff during field visits.

  11. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

Knowledge of:

  • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.

  • Knowledge of current codes and regulatory standards governing the state’s engineering activities of public works construction.

  • Knowledge of practices followed in the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.

  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computers, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.

  • Skill in operating various software, including Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, management, contractors, consultants and the general public.

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be graduation or current enrollment in an engineering degree program at an ABET accredited University or two years experience as engineering technician.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid California driver's license required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.

  • Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.

  • Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.

  • Requires the ability to stand for long periods.

  • Requires the ability to walk long distances.

  • Performs lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.

  • May be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold and rain.

  • May be required to traverse hilly or rocky terrain.

  • May be required to wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus.

  • May be required to work within enclosed spaces or at heights above ground level.

  • May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.

  • May be required to work evenings or weekends.
