Dennis
Washburn has made a career of advertising, marketing and communications
programs at agencies representing organizations of renown in manufacturing,
technology, information management, sophisticated aerospace and electronic
systems, healthcare and consumer products -- large and small, and numerous
business-to-business enterprises. He has managed advertising and sales
programs, brand development, corporate identity and image campaigns,
investor relations and public information/PR for local, regional, national
and international businesses and governments.
Skilled in strategic planning, negotiations, team building and productivity,
presentations, campaign development, writing, public speaking and protocol,
Dennis is also a certificated mediator with experience in public sector
mediation and negotiations. He holds a UC Berkeley BA in International
Relations/Political Science and taught management as an Associate Professor
during his two-year MBA Program in Marketing and Finance at San Diego State
University.
Dennis is a popular elected official, successful in electioneering,
organizational development, public affairs, community building,
intergovernmental relations amongst municipal, county, regional, state,
federal and international entities. He is a founder, 5-term Council Member
and 4-time Mayor of the City of Calabasas. He also is a Director, current
Vice President, and past President of the Resource Conservation District of
the Santa Monica Mountains, a three-term Santa Monica Bay Restoration
Commissioner, a 7-term Regional Councilmember of the Southern California
Association of Governments, Founder and 3-time President of the Las Virgenes-Malibu
Council of Governments, and Division Representative to the State Board and
Past President of the 88-city LA County Division of the League of California
Cities.
PROFESSIONAL
AND GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE:
Executive
Director, Foundation for Pierce College,
Conducting
programs and projects for institutional advancement and funds development to
enhance the Pierce College campus, student and faculty support, departmental
programs and initiatives, community awareness and involvement, and alumni
association activities, growth and development.
Mayor and Councilmember, City of Calabasas, CA 91-08, culminating
three incorporation campaigns in the 70s and 80s, Calabasas was formed in
March, 1991, and voters elected Dennis to the City Council, and he has
served as Mayor in 91-92, 95-96, 2000-01 and 2006-07. Calabasas, a
municipal corporation, has grown to $400 million on its balance sheet and an
annual budget exceeding $20 Million in 18 years. Dennis represents
Calabasas on the Las Virgenes/Malibu Council of Governments, serving three
terms as President. He also chaired the SCAG Energy and Environment Policy
Committee and its Water Policy Task Force, and was Vice Chair of the SCAG
Administration Committee. Dennis is Chairman of the Santa Monica Mountains
Fund, and is a Trustee of the Conejo-Las Virgenes Future Foundation.

Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains. elected and appointed
to several four-year terms since 1986. He facilitated development of, and
now chairs the Malibu Creek Watershed Council, has served as President of
the Board for many terms, and has been recognized as an environmental leader
by the Environmental Protection Agency, is a recipient of the National
Association of Conservation Districts Goodyear Award for Conservation
Achievement, and has served on the NACD Urban, Coastal and Community
Committee.

Dennis Washburn is a community builder, communicator and mediator,
professionally and in spirit. A third generation Californian
educated in Alhambra, at UC Berkeley (BA) and San Diego State
University (MBA), his first career in advertising and marketing drew
him to build his home, family and devotion to a sense of place, in
the Santa Monica Mountains over the past 37 years. |

is a founder, first Mayor and Council member of LA County's 88th and
still newest city of Calabasas. His passion for the conservation of
natural resources finds expression through 20+ years of service as
an elected Director and board President of the Resource Conservation
District of Santa Monica Mountains, membership on the State
Association's Water Quality Task Force and appointment to the
National Association of Conservation Districts' Urban, Coastal and
Community Resources Committee. |

Dennis Washburn incorporated this broad experience in the business,
public and non-profit sectors into a concurrent career as a
professional mediator and negotiator through the Southern California
Mediation Group, focused on resolving complex or sensitive public
sector conflicts. In his spare time, he creates and organizes
community events, festivals and celebrations to foster the sense of
Community that is so difficult to sustain in our new digital age. |
